Chile Maritime Country

Due to its geographical location, the ocean is a vital part of Chile's present and future. Our nation has a long-standing relationship with the sea, and the ocean is essential to its social, economic and cultural development. Ninety-five percent of Chile's foreign trade is transported by sea, relying on a fleet that maintains significant tonnage in the region, manned by seafarers trained according to the standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Chile has established a National Ocean Policy and an Ocean Program that provide strategic guidelines, orientations and priorities for all relevant domestic sectors in alignment with the nation's current context. These frameworks address issues such as conservation, economic development, security, territorial management and scientific advancement.
Chile is submitting its candidature for the IMO Council in category “C” for the period 2026 - 2027, reaffirming its commitment to contributing actively to the safety of human life at sea, the preservation and sustainability of the ocean and its resources.
Our country firmly believes that IMO remains the most effective multilateral maritime forum for implementing international instruments necessary to ensure safer, cleaner and better-known seas.
